Industry Affiliate Program

Creatively disrupt the way you do business.

The VCUarts CoLab provides industry organizations and entrepreneurs the opportunity to collaborate with a custom-built team that can provide unique insight and ideas toward a problem or need. Industry Affiliates find that they are positively challenged by the open and innovative culture, emerging technologies and techniques and the enthusiasm and talent of students in VCUarts.

How CoLab Benefits Industry Affiliates

Projects can be designed for one student or a team of up to five students. The students work as interns in the Center for the Creative Economy facilities in the Depot Building, and/or on site at the industry affiliate, under the guidance of CoLab faculty and industry mentors. Project timeframes range from five to 30 weeks throughout the academic year and/or summer months. The engagement is formalized by a gift donation to VCUarts, outlined below.

Specific benefits to industry affiliates include access to:

  • innovative concepts, design directions or prototypes developed by interdisciplinary creative teams.
  • effective user-centered research.
  • campus facilities including advanced computing and rapid prototyping technology.
  • faculty and student expertise in creative disciplines (e.g. design) as well as business, psychology, computer science, engineering, education, etc.
  • talented students for future internships or employment.

Other benefits include the opportunity to:

  • engage in advanced concept development and problem solving beyond the scope of normal business activities.
  • support higher education research, student learning and workforce development.
  • create a strong connection between an education in the arts and design disciplines and business innovation.

How CoLab Benefits Students

Students enroll in the CoLab course (ARTS 393) and serve as interns who work on research-intensive, industry-based projects. Students undertake a complex project that consists of a series of planned experiences with clearly defined goals and pre-determined assessment strategies. This allows students to contribute and learn with an organization and develop their skills as a professional.

Specific benefits to students include:

  • building a depth of applied skills and professional experience in their major discipline.
  • developing a broad spectrum of entrepreneurship and transferable enterprise skills across a range of disciplines.
  • working on interdisciplinary teams.
  • experience with working on a range of emerging technologies.
